The creature · Julien Selz
Curiosity gives ideas their shape.
Since 2007, Julien Selz has taken ideas across media: from golf to the senses, from colour to printed objects, from play to a shared experience.

Julien Selz
Julien starts with a use, an image or a tool. He explores what that idea could become in the hand, in the home or with others.
Golf becomes a game and fragrances. Printing brings images onto cubes. An object can open into a screen, an artistic composition or a gathering: the creature accompanies these changes.
How ideas take shape
Paths of curiosity.
Since 2011
One square opens several paths.
From the puzzle cube to Cube² tiles and then POSTER, Julien takes the same language across media and gestures.
In 2011, Julien Selz created United Square. The game began with a box of 49 pieces, assembled by matching their colours on a virtual grid of 25 or 49 spaces.
The puzzle cube was invented before Cube², the portable version with 25 tiles and no board. Plateau Puzzle then added a board; magnetic editions and mini-cubes explored other ways to play and build.

2008
What if golf could be felt?
Beyond the gestures of play, Julien explores the sensations of the course. Grass, water and wood become another language.
The g’olfactif course brings the world of golf into the home. Presented in 2008, its set contains three home fragrances: green, galet and gaïac.
Incense is a separate variation. Julien’s choice is to let the same world live through another sense, beyond the Dépar dice game.

From tools to images
A tool opens up another form.
An object printer becomes the starting point for images on cubes. Painting, printing, personalising: Julien explores what the medium allows.
With DYC, created in 2012, Julien adapts an object printer used for golf balls, among other objects. Images can be printed directly onto the puzzle cube. The web 3D configurator and QR solving extend personalisation.
The own-brand chapter in 2022 then explores painting followed by full-colour UV printing. The images show the resulting objects. KUBIKO continues the exploration of colour, decor and manipulation today; Paris 2017 also reveals its collective dimension.

2026
What if the game stayed on display?
With POSTER, a game can give way to an image to display. Play finds another use.
POSTER extends the language of United Square into an object to display. The image comes together, the colours invite play, and the POSTER returns to its easel or the wall.
A new medium opens up a different relationship with the object. You can look at it, pick it up and return to play; on-screen experiences extend the same world.

An encounter
An encounter opens up the game.
Julien’s meeting with Stéphane Robert gave the game an educational dimension.
At a fair, Stéphane Robert discovered United Square. A mathematics teacher and trainer in introducing mathematics through board games, he proposed developing its educational side with Julien.
He wrote the activity worksheets and contributed to the challenges. The game also became an opportunity to explore, reason and learn together.
